6 Motorized (And Green!) Bicycles

We’ve reviewed a bunch of motorized bikes recently, so I put together a list of some of the best ones.

All of these bikes are hybrid bikes, providing motorized assistance to traditional peddle power. None of these directly emissions (although some are electric, which indirectly create emissions), making these bikes a great green method of transportation.

So why continue paying for gas and producing emissions? Get yourself a green bike and save both money and the environment!

Reviews and links for the bikes after the break.

Matra MS1

Mantra Ms1

The Matra is a hybrid human/electric bike, so you’ll be able to pedal manually to assist the motor, or when the battery is dead.

The MS1′s range is about 62 miles, and features regenerative braking to boost the range.

It’s top speed is 28mph, but you can always go faster by pedaling. (Some laws prohibit motorized vehicles to go faster than 30mph without a license, but there’s no law if you’re pedaling!)

It’s not currently on the market, but rumor has it that it will be selling for just under $5000.

Electrobike Pi

Electrobike Pi

This bike is hybrid human/electric, and produces about 1 horsepower.
Out of the box you’re going to get a maximum speed of about 20mph, however it appears there is a way to increase this up to 46mph with some tinkering.

On a 3 hour charge, it has a range of about 30 miles.

This one’s pretty expensive however, selling for $8,000 from Design Within Reach.

Pearl Hydrogen’s Fuel-Cell Bike

Pearl Hydrogen Bike

This bike is a hydrogen fuel-cell powered bike, providing much more range over electric bikes.

It has a range of up to 100km, and has a top speed of about 25kph.

The obvious downside to hydrogen fuel-cells is delivery. Hydrogen stations are hard to find. Peral Hydrogen says they have this solved, but no word on the details yet.

This one sells for $2,600, but should come down to $500 once mass production gets started.

The ohm comes with some nice comfort features as well, with dual suspension, disc brakes, head & tail lights, chainguard, rack, and fender. You’ll be riding in style for sure!

The ohm sells for a mid-range price of $2875.

“SunnyBike” Solar-Powered Bicycle

SunnyBike EV 2

By far the greenest of the bikes here, the SunnyBike is a hybrid human/solar powered bicycle.

Taking it’s power from the sun, there’s no electricity or hydrogen needed, and if you’re outside in the sun, you’re going to get an unlimited range.

It has a top speed of about 30kph coming from a 500 watt front motor. It also has 17 amp hr. batteries for operation at night or when it’s cloudy.
